Rothbury Railway

The railway arrived in Rothbury in 1870 with a line from Scots Gap. It had an eventful history with derailments, crashes and the outbreak of war. Services were disrupted in 1947 due to an extremely severe winter and in 1948 the service was nationalised.  By 1951 passenger service was reduced to two up and two down trains and even these services were withdrawn the following year. Freight continued a while longer but the line was finally closed in 1965. Today some of the stations survive as private dwellings and it is still possible to walk the old line.
